For nearly three decades, the Pine Barrens Society’s principle function has been education.  The more that people know about the Pine Barrens, the more they appreciate them -- and the stronger their commitment to preservation.

The Society uses every medium and forum imaginable to spread understanding of the importance of this ecosystem.

We use print, radio and television. We use mail, public service announcements and the internet.  We make presentations in schools, for clubs and organizations and before government agencies and legislative bodies at local, regional state and federal levels.

We involve the public through lectures, hikes, contests and special programs.  We publish a dramatic and informative newsletter three times-a-year, and produce a 30-minute television program which airs weekly on Cablevision channel 20 (a new program is shown every month).  Click here to view this month's program streaming online!

Make sure to visit Bridge to the Barrens, our interactive education portal that is being used by parents, teachers and students Island-wide to learn more about the Pine Barrens and have a little fun!

The students at the Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Sayville created a video on the importance of the protecting the Pine Barrens, and the ecosystem's relationship to clean drinking water on Long Island. The video is the product of both the Eco-Challenge, as well as the classroom's Pine Barrens Ecology curriculum provided by the Central Pine Barrens Commission. Watch the student's video here!

Become involved in our Eco-Challenge, a fun environmental education contest sponsored by the National Grid Foundation! The contest utilizes New York State learning standards and can easily fit into existing curricula. Email info@pinebarrens.org for more details.
