ENVIRONMENTALISTS OPPOSE HUGE RESORT PLAN
5/5/2008 - Abandoning two years of neutrality, the Long
Island Pine Barrens Society and other environ-
mental and civic leaders announced opposition
today to a $1billion resort project proposed for
the Pine Barrens in Calverton. They blamed “the
Town of Riverhead’s insistence on a biased
environmental review process controlled by the
town” for their decision to try to block the
planned mega-resort at the town’s Enterprise
Park in Calverton (EPCAL) where drinking water
protection and habitat preservation are
threatened.
LONG ISLAND LEADERS SEEK STATE FUNDING FOR OPEN SPACE
4/2/2008 - Over 70 Long Island leaders from in and out of
government have written to the Long Island
legislative delegation seeking increased funding
for open space and farmland preservation.
CHARGE BROADWATER WITH FALSE SAVINGS CLAIM: Environmentalists Ask Attorney General to Investigate
2/20/2008 - “It’s a bald-faced lie,” said Pine Barrens Society
Executive Director Richard Amper. He was
re-ferring to the claim contained in a $100,000
advertising campaign and in submissions to
gov-ernment and energy groups by Broadwater Energy
which seeks approval for a massive Liquefied
Natural Gas factory in the Long Island Sound.
ENDAGERED OWL AT EPCAL UPS ENVIRONMENTAL STAKES
2/8/2008 - The need for an unbiased environmental analysis of
all proposed development at Riverhead's Enterprise
Park at Calverton was heightened this week when
the New York State endangered Short-eared Owl was
photographed at EPCAL. The avian species has been
known to inhabit the site for more than a decade
but the owl was only added to the Endangered
Species List in 1999. There are thought to be
eight or fewer Short-eared Owls on Long Island and
four of them have been seen at the EPCAL site.
ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND YOUTH TEAM-UP AGAINST BROADWATER
2/8/2008 - Angry that oil and energy giants are spending
more than $100,000 to promote Broadwater’s
proposal to build a Liquefied Natural Gas
factory in Long Island sound, environmentalists
and civic groups have launched a grassroots
campaign to respond and they’ve gotten help from
one of Broadwater’s youngest opponents -- eight-
year-old Leo Burke of Rocky Point.
COURT EXCLUDES DEVELOPMENT FROM REVIEW
2/1/2008 - A New York State Supreme Court Judge has ruled
that mega-development at the Town of Riverhead’s
En-terprise Park at Calverton (EPCAL) is not
subject to review by the New York State Pine
Barrens Commis-sion, despite the fact that the
site is located in the heart of the Pine Barrens.
GROUPS WARN RIVERHEAD THREATENS ENVIRONMENT
1/25/2008 - Ten major environmental groups warn that recent
actions by the Town of Riverhead at its
En-terprise Park at Calverton pose serious threats
to the environment in the Pine Barrens, there.
They say that a lingering lawsuit is undermining
protection of drinking water and preservation of
critical habitat, while the town seeks to avoid
laws designed to protect a regional resource.
