Welcome to the Long Island Pine Barrens,
one of the Island's premier ecosystems. The
Pine Barrens once extended for about
250,000 acres across central Long Island from
eastern Nassau County to eastern
Suffolk County. Today, after decades of
development and habitat alteration, the Pine
Barrens are reduced to about 100,000 acres.
Following are a set of slides that introduce
the major ecological forces and processes,
plant and animal species, and landscapes of
the Pine Barrens.
